Few Points of Distinction Between Natural and Lab Diamonds

Diamonds have always been the sign of class and aristocracy. Right from the days of ancient period; diamonds have been considered to be as one of the most precious stones and people have always craved to have this wonderful gift of the nature in their possession. Diamond is formed under the earth’s crust; as a result of immense pressure and heat. Until the mid 1900s, the only way to get diamond was through mining. However, later on, new methods were innovated where diamonds could be manufactured and produced in the labs. This brought about a huge change in the diamond market, as massive amount could be produced, and the price also decreased considerably.

There are few differences when it comes to Lab diamonds vs mined ones. However, in terms of their look and features, there aren’t many, and hence to an untrained eye, these differences will not be visible.

So, what exactly are the differences between the two? In the following section, you will be offered a brief insight into some of the main points of distinctions between mined diamonds and those which are manufactured in the laboratory.

Are Lab made Diamonds Real?

Over the years, there have been lot of debate among the experts whether lab diamonds are real ones or not. Some are of the opinion that since they are grown manually in a lab and not extracted from natures, lab made diamonds cannot be regarded as real ones. One the other hand, some experts say that the same natural process is replicated in the making of lab diamonds and hence, they are as real as the ones available in nature.

It needs to be mentioned in this regard that when it comes to certification for quality or other aspects; both types of diamonds are treated equally.

Lab Grown Diamond – What is it?

The only difference between a lab grown diamond and a natural one is the way they are created. A mined diamond is a gift of nature which is formed beneath the crust of the earth with immense pressure and temperature. With volcanic eruptions; these diamonds raise near to the surface of the earth, and then they are mined.

On the other hand, when it comes to the lab grown diamonds, the same natural process is being imitated. There are basically two different types of mechanisms which are used in the making of lab diamonds. They are as follows

  • High Pressure High Temperature Process (HPHT)
  • Chemical Vapor Deposition Process. (CVD)

There are some differences between these two processes. HPHT is considered to be the more advanced form of creating diamonds in the lab. It involves lesser amount of resources as compared to CVD and hence, the production cost comes down by a great extent; which results in low market price of these diamonds.
